BARBARA HELEN MOON (nee Metcalfe) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our loved and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Barbara Helen Moon on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Golden West Centennial Lodge at the age of 81 years. Left to cherish Barb's memory is her loving husband of 60 years of marriage, Bert; son Geoff (Gwen); daughters Pat (Wayne) and Kerry (Kirk); grandchildren Scott, Todd (Twyla), Aynsley (Scott), Jaime (Greg) and Calvin (Toni), and Sarah (Kevin) and Courtney; great-grandchildren Tyson, Spencer, Easton, and Keegan. Barb was born and raised in Winnipeg, the youngest daughter of Myrtle and Stanley Metcalfe. She attended local schools in the Wolseley area and graduated from Gordon Bell High school where she excelled both academically and athletically, making life-long friendships (The Club) that have endured to this day. When Barb was first married she worked for Eaton's in the Wages Office and then left to raise her three children. She returned to work part time as a bookkeeper for the Kirkfield Hotel for many years, and then with the United Way in the Comptroller's department. Barb was very athletic and enjoyed many sports and activities over the years, from cross country skiing and bowling, to square-dancing and line-dancing. One of her great passions was bridge, and she was a part of several Bridge clubs. One of those groups lasted for more than 50 years. The Bridge Club Girls, as they were known, enjoyed many outings and getaways, most notably their annual Grand Forks weekends. Barb also had a love of the arts, including the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, which she enjoyed attending with her daughters who joined her in being season ticket holders for many years. Many wonderful summers were spent at the cabin in Victoria Beach, with visits with friends and neighbours and enjoying the beach life. There was lots of family fun and good times from hours spent on the beach, swimming, evening Rumoli games, badminton challenges and bike rides to the bakery. The after-supper stroll to Stewart's store, or the Moonlight Inn was a nightly tradition. Barb's children were fortunate to have a mother who was also their staunchest supporter, biggest fan, and truest friend. She was a very thoughtful person, always there to lend a helping hand, putting others before herself. Her family was of top importance, and she had a lively interest in whatever any of them was doing. No matter when you dropped in, Barb would sit at the kitchen table or in the living room for a visit. She was a treasured grandmother, who was devoted to all her grandchildren. She had special bond with them, making any time together with them like they were the most important person in the world. As Barb's health deteriorated, she still struggled to be the person she always was. It was our good fortune to have her loving kindness and caring spirit guide us for so many years, and her delight and pride in her family is a legacy we will all hold dear, and a tradition we will continue to carry on. On Tuesday, December 28, 2010 Barb's Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. in Golden West Centennial Lodge, 811 School Rd., Winnipeg, Manitoba. As her family, we would like to thank all the wonderful staff at Golden West for treating Barb with respect and dignity, and for their love and support. A special thanks to Sherry and Joanne, who were always there for her.
