Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySTEPHEN (STEVE) M. BYZUK It is with immense sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Steve Byzuk on December 18, 2010 at the age of 79. Steve was born in Winnipeg on May 4, 1931. He filled many roles in his lifetime: a caring and loving husband of 56 years to Helen (nee Sikora), a devoted father to his son Michael (Debbie) and to his daughter Karen (Mark Turner). He was a proud grandfather to Brock, Shane (Gillian), Darrell, Troy, Jace and great-grandfather to Colbie. Additionally he is survived by many nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Steve was predeceased by his father Michael, mother Mary, step-mother Jean, and brothers: Victor, Bill and Jack and other members of his extended family. Steve proudly served as a Sergeant in the Canadian Army (Militia) from 1958 to 1965. He was employed with the Department of National Defence - CFB Winnipeg in the vehicle mechanic maintenance shop (BMLO) from 1957 until his retirement as a supervisor in 1991. Following his retirement, Steve and Helen made Lee River their home where many days were fulfilled with family and friends gathered to golf, swim, fish, snowmobile, play cards or simply relax. Steve also led a rewarding life through volunteer work. He served as a proud member / volunteer with a number of organizations over the years. Most notably was his work on the Board and as a coach at Glenwood Community Centre in St. Vital. It was in St. Vital that he started the first six-man football program and was recognized for his contribution by the Winnipeg Football Club. His passions included his family, the outdoors, all sports and animals. He often fed, rescued and tended to a multitude of animals. He was an avid golfer and curler. In his younger years, dad was an amateur boxer. He also had an uncanny ability to fix things - there was nothing he could not build, fix or make better. He will be remembered and cherished for his strength, commitment and acts of kindness. For those of us who remain, we have a myriad of memories to pull from for comfort. He lived his life with laughter, wisdom, love and a very quick wit. He always had a funny saying or comment for every occasion. He was dearly loved and will be terribly missed by many, but will live on in their hearts and memories. The family wishes to thank the emergency staff, paramedics and the R.C.M.P., Lac du Bonnet Detachment for their assistance. We also extend a special thanks to Don and Joyce Sikora for their assistance and continued support. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Interment will take place at a later date. Flowers are beautiful but not necessary - thank you. Instead, please make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.
