IRENE SMITH (nee SIMPSON) It is with profound sadness that the family of Irene Smith announces her passing on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at the age of 92 years. Irene was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2000, her brother William Simpson, and parents Mary Jane and Alexander Simpson. Left to forever cherish her memory are sons Barton (Joy) and Douglas (Peggy) and beloved granddaughters Janet, Natasha, Jenna, Alexandra and Hilary. Mom made the Fort Garry neighbourhood her home for almost 60 years. Combining work outside the home at times with an active family life, Mom made sure that family always came first in her priorities. The love, nurturing and companionship she so freely gave throughout her entire lifetime defined her as a wonderful mother and friend. As teacher, advisor, caregiver, and confidant, Mom nurtured us all. Particularly remarkable were the bonds of affection and the appreciation that grew so strong between grandmother and grand-daughters. This mutual enrichment of lives was rewarding for all, and gave Mom tremendous pleasure in her later years. Mom led a full life and remained active and engaged in events with family and friends right to the end. The friends she held dearest provided enduring companionship, joy and comfort for well over 50 years. These deep relationships, sustained over many late-night card games, were truly exceptional and contributed so much happiness to Mom's life. Mom's gentle spirit, strength of character, and infectious laugh never faded. They will be missed forevermore by our family. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. in Thomson In the Park Funeral Home 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations in Irene's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba at 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.
