MARIE ALICE SOVAK (nee MAYKUT) It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Marie Sovak on December 28, 2010 with her family at her side at Park Manor Personal Care Home. Marie was born on March 31, 1923 to Albert and Sally Maykut in Poland. She came to Canada in 1928 with her parents and lived on a farm near Glenella. Marie worked very hard on the farm helping her parents get established and assisted with the raising of her sister and brother. Marie later moved to Winnipeg where she married Thomas (Anthony) Sovak on May 6, 1944. Shortly after their marriage Marie and Tony moved to the Elmwood area where they resided for 20 years. They then moved to Transcona where they lived for a few years before Tony passed away on January 1, 1969. When Mom arrived in Winnipeg she worked in a sewing factory, and due to her remarkable ability to cook, her later employment always involved cooking. She cooked for various places, such as Rancho Don Carlos, Mount Royal and Red River Community College. Mom will be remembered most for her unconditional love for her family and her bedside devotion to her husband during his lengthy illness. Due to her husband's illness, Mom was the pillar and strength of the family. She faced and endured many hardships always sacrificing any personal gain for the benefit of her family. Birthdays of her children and grandchildren were seldom, if ever, forgotten. Marie will also be remembered for her great cooking and baking expertise as she always loved caring for people by providing home cooked meals in her own special way. Mom's special time of the year was Christmas as she loved having the family over and putting together a wonderful spread of everyone's favourites. Her children and grandchildren were definitely her life. Marie was a devoted Catholic and long time member of the St. Gerard Parish. She was also a member of the Catholic Women's League of Canada for over 51 years. In addition, she volunteered during the Second World War for the soldiers that were being deployed overseas. Marie is survived by her three children, Marleen (Harold) Baraniuk, Len (Hope) Sovak and Ken (Sharon) Sovak, five grandchildren Dean (Sherri) Baraniuk, Shawn (Amy) Baraniuk, Scott Sovak, Curtis Sovak and Brittany Sovak, four great-grandchildren Noah, Everett, Jonathan and Austin, and a sister Frances (Joe) Fleck and their son Mark. Marie was predeceased by her husband, Tony Sovak, parents, Albert and Sally Maykut and brother Joe Maykut. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 3 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gerard Parish located at 45 Foster Street off Nairn Ave. with Father Pierre presiding. A private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marie's name may be made to St. Gerard or a charity of personal choice. The family would like to thank Tom and Gloria Kennedy, and Marie's sister Frances and her husband Joe for all their exceptional care and assistance over the years, particularly after the passing of Marie's husband. The family would also like to give special thanks to the staff at Park Manor Personal Care Home for their kindness and compassion to Mom and the family. KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193
