ARTHUR JOHN SMITH June 20, 1924 to December 28, 2010 Arthur passed away peacefully at Misericordia Place Personal Care Home after a lengthy struggle with dementia. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Noreen (Plischke), and his children: Donna, Lynne (Norman), Kathryn (John), Kevin (Yvette) and Wendy; grandchildren Shawn (Jasmine), Stacey, Megan, Kristen, Jackson, Kristina, Stephanie, Tyler, Stephanie, Lauren and Kelsey; great-grandchildren Jaycen and Jade; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Katharina (Buchner) and Josef Schmidt; brothers Constantine and Victor; sisters Heromina, Mina and Mary. Arthur was born in Winnipeg and educated at St. Joseph's RC Parish where his parents were founding members. He enlisted in the air force during the Second World War and served in England. Art started the Hi-Way Cleaners business with his brother, Victor, after the war and married Noreen in 1949. Art became a successful commercial realtor after selling his share in Hi-Way Cleaners to Vic. He was a long-time Executive Board member of St. Joseph's Catholic Men's Sick Benefit Club. Art retired at age 68. He and Noreen enjoyed travelling in Europe and the Sunbelt, bowling, tennis, golf, walking and the annual family gathering at Clear Lake in Riding Mountain National Park. The family is very grateful to the staff at Misericordia Place for their loving care of Arthur. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, 355 Andrews Street at Mountain Avenue. Interment to follow in Assumption Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined.
