PETER MCDOUGALL June 15, 1927 - December 27, 2010 Peter John McDougall was born in Standard, Alberta 15 June 1927, the fifth of seven children. The family later moved to a country teacherage where Peter often spoke of helping the local vet with horses and cattle. In the early 40s, his family moved to Ottawa where, as a youth, he pursued many interests, including boatbuilding and skiing (as a member of the Ottawa ski club) and some more unusual activities including the construction of a self designed diving bell in which he survived test dives in the Ottawa River. In 1951 he joined INCO in Sudbury, Ontario, where he later met the love of his life Rowena Morris, whom he married in 1954. Peter and Rowena had four children who were raised in Thompson, Manitoba, where Peter had been transferred in 1960. They all share fond memories of weekend trips to Paint Lake with a regular road trip in the summer, downhill skiing at Mystery Mountain Ski hill and snowmobiling in the winter. Peter also enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends. Peter retired as the General Foreman of the Smelter in 1982. Soon after, Peter and Rowena moved to Winnipeg, regularly travelling to Mesa, Arizona, as well as trips to the Caribbean and Hawaii, where Peter would scuba dive. He prospected in the Bissett area of Manitoba with a geologist friend. Peter volunteered with Meals on Wheels for many years ... up to his 80s. He loved gardening and his skills were recognized with many awards. In later years he regularly gave produce to Winnipeg Harvest. The family would like to thank all the staff of 3 East at Deer Lodge Centre for their exceptional and compassionate care. Peter will be dearly missed by his wife Rowena; sisters Isobel and Nancy; children Molly, Dave (Brenda), Jean (Jeff), Sandra (Colin); grandchildren, Don, Bob, Kelly, Jessie, Rob, Jackie and Sian; and extended family. A celebration of his life will be held at the Shaftesbury Retirement Residence Chapel, 905 Shaftesbury Blvd. on January 29th at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to the Winnipeg Humane Society (http://www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca/home) or the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation (http://www.deerlodge.mb.ca/foundation/about foundation.asp).
