JULIJANS STAUDZS Passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Saturday, January 1, 2011. Julijans is survived by his brother Zenons and wife Dorothy; nephews Andrew, Victor, Terry and Kelly; nieces Christine, Donna and Tammy, and their families. He is also survived by family in Latvia. He was predeceased by his wife Genovefa on July 4, 1985 and by his brothers, Antons, Bronislavs and Anatolijs. Julijans was born on January 20, 1915 in Vilani, Latvia. He attended school in Varaklani, and after completion, worked as director of a dairy co-op. He married Genovefa in 1941 in Varaklani where they lived for a few years. During the war years, Julijans along with three of his brothers, served in the Latvian Legion on the Eastern Front. After the war, Julijans and Genovefa lived in a displaced persons camp in Memmingen, Germany and in 1949, with two of his brothers and their families, as well as many other Latvians, immigrated to Canada. They then worked on a sugar beet farm near Carmen, and in 1950 moved to Winnipeg. Julijans then was employed by Century Motors for the next 30 years, retiring in 1980. Julijans greatest joy was to spend time at their cabin on the Winnipeg River, near Lac Du Bonnet, where he spent the days fishing, smoking goldeye and just enjoying nature. For many years, Julijans was active in the Winnipeg Latvian Society, where he contributed his time and effort to various causes. Julijans always held very strong views on world events and expressed these forcefully when the occasion arose. Memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 11 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St., with Fr. K. Bettens officiating. Interment will be held at Brookside Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Julijans may be made to a charity of one's choice. KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193
