JACK MORLEY CHAPMAN, Q.C. With deep sadness we announce the passing of Jack Morley Chapman Q.C., who died peacefully on December 23, 2010 at the age of 80. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Naomi; sons and daughters-in-law Arthur and Jo-Ann, Stephen and Sima, and Kenneth and Michelle; grandchildren Shari, Jessica, Daniel, Yael, Orli, Leora, and Noa; sister Rivie and husband Bob Ruskin; and three generations of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Benjamin and Katie Chmelnitsky and siblings Esther, Sylvia, Goldie, Abe, Blanche, Harry, and Gertie. Jack was born in Winnipeg on July 26, 1930 and became a classic North End success story. He was educated at Machray School and St. John's Tech. After high school, he entered the University of Manitoba, where he graduated from law school in 1953. His career started in a small office on Main Street and he later became a senior partner at Simkin, Gallagher and Taylor, McCaffrey. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1966 and appeared before all levels of courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada. Perhaps his greatest honour was being elected president of the Law Society of Manitoba. His real expertise was labour law, and he was one of Canada's foremost arbitrators. Until 2009, he was an adjudicator, determining compensation for Native Schools victims. Jack lived life to the fullest. He was a private pilot, ham radio operator, avid reader, history lover, traveler, and could talk about a vast array of subjects. Most importantly, Jack was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He often used his mediation skills in private life, helping friends and family resolve personal disputes. Funeral services were held on December 24 at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. Pallbearers were Norman Oman, Bruce Sarbit, Robin Super, Blair Dawson, Gabriel Winestock, and Richard Chernick. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Ruskin, Gavin Wood, Alvin McGregor, and Brian Romalis. We thank the doctors and staff at the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit, CancerCare Manitoba, and the GD-3 Unit at Health Sciences Centre, as well as Rabbi Green and Rabbi Pinsker. Donations can be made in Jack's memory to the Palliative Care Endowment Fund at St. Boniface Hospital, CancerCare Manitoba, or the Canadian Human Rights Museum. VE4AE-SK
