Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNELLIE SUTYLA (nee HAWRYSZKO) February 14, 1913 January 7, 2011 Nellie Sutyla of Arborg passed away on Friday, January 7, 2011 at the Arborg Personal Care Home at the age of 97. Nellie was predeceased by her parents Wasyl and Maria; siblings John and Anne; husband Frank; son Steve; daughter Frances; son-in-law Arnie; and grandson Darryl. Nellie is survived by her daughter Mary (Bob), son Leo (Mary Ann), daughter Linda (Larry), grandchildren Brenda (Guy), Lana, Noreen (Tom), Danny, Roger (Charlotte), Marni (Lee), Dwayne (Rosie) and nine great-grandchildren Jessie, Kayla, Cody, Sierra, Jacob, Lucas, Kassandra, Megan and Aidan. Nellie was born February 14, 1913 on the Hawryszko homestead in Ledwyn, Manitoba. She briefly attended Tarno School because being the eldest of her siblings she had to help with the many chores around the farm. On February 21, 1933 Nellie and Frank Sutyla were the first couple married at the St. Philip's Roman Catholic Church in Arborg. While living in a small horse drawn caboose on the SW ΒΌ 12-24-3E in Progress, Manitoba, Frank and Nellie built their first home, a small log house. In 1937 they moved their family from the Hawryszko homestead to their new home in Progress. Their farm consisted of cattle, horses, sheep, pigs and chickens. In 1944 a larger home was built to accommodate the family. Nellie was a strong woman from good pioneer stock and ably looked after the growing needs of her family. Everything that was needed for the house was made by her. Sheep wool was carded for quilts, duck and goose down was kept for pillows. She embroidered tablecloths and pillowcases. She took great pride in her enormous vegetable garden and many flowers. This pride carried with her later in her life for the flower bed in front of her Arborg suite was always brimming with beautiful bright flowers and a few tomato plants, some garlic, and onions added in for good measure. In 1982 Frank and Nellie retired from the farm and moved to the Sunrise Lodge in Arborg. Here Frank and Nellie enjoyed their retirement and in 1983 Frank and Nellie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In 1988 Frank passed away and though now on her own, Nellie kept herself busy playing cards with her friends at the lodge and enjoying many visits from family and friends. In 2002 Nellie moved to the Arborg Personal Care Home. Over the years her memory continued to deteriorate but she was always a cheerful soul who would greet everybody with a smile. Her eyes always lit up when she saw her visitors, especially her great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at the Arborg Personal Care Home for the care shown to Nellie over the years. A funeral service will be held at the Arborg (MacKenzie) Funeral Chapel on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at the St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Cemetery in Ledwyn. In lieu of flowers, if family and friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Arborg Personal Care Home or a charity of one's choice. Arborg (MacKenzie) Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
