JANET CHRISTINA (MCGREGOR) MACLENNAN Janet Christina (McGregor) MacLennan died on January 9, 2011. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Roderick MacLaren, Rory (1995), and their cherished son Robert Grant, Rob (1997). Loved and loving mother of Glyde and Mary Jane, dear grandmother of Ashley, Rory and Angus. Janet was born in Calgary, the youngest of six children of Scottish immigrants, James Green and Margaret Jane (Grant) who, along with her siblings, James, Margaret (Gammon), George, June (Langan) and John, predeceased her. She is survived by nieces and nephews in Alberta and the United States. An Alberta and Canadian highland dancing champion, Janet danced as World Champion in San Francisco the day war was declared. Growing up in Calgary, she went to Crescent Heights High School and Normal School. She taught eight grades in a one-room country school house before marrying her high school sweetheart, Rory. Janet and Rory moved to Winnipeg following the Second World War when Rory joined CJOB. Their first home was on Windermere Avenue in Fort Garry. There were brief moves to Montreal, Calgary and Oakville, Ontario. A lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Winnipeg, Janet was a spiritual person and a caring friend. Her quick wit was a joy. She was former president of the Women's Committee of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and supported the RWB Things Shop and the Stitchery Group, which grew from friends made there. She was a longstanding member of the Niners at Southwood Golf and Country Club. Janet loved the cottage at Big Whiteshell Lake and the winter home in Deland, Florida. She was above all a dedicated mother, whose children, and later her grandchildren, were her top priority. Funeral service will be at First Presbyterian Church, Thursday, January 13 at 11 a.m., 61 Picardy Place at Canora, just off Portage Ave. (City parking restrictions will be waived.) A reception will follow the service in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, bequests in Janet's name may be made to the Lord Selkirk Boys Pipe Band, 484 Raquette Street, Winnipeg, MB R3K 1N8 or to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Auntie Jan and Uncle Rory were my adoptive type parents while I was going to school at University of Manitoba. I miss the days of having tea in the flowered armchairs and going to tea with Auntie Jan at Eaton's. The tea always tasted better there, and I loved her stories. She will be sorely missed by all. - Posted by: Wendy McLennan (neice) on: May 27, 2012
