Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELEN PAULS Passed away peacefully at Carman Memorial Hospital, January 11, 2011 just two days short of her 96th birthday. Helen was born in Waldheim, Ukraine January 13, 1915 and came to Canada with her family in 1925. Following the death of her father at Mather, Manitoba in 1929, Helen and her sister Jessie found work in Winnipeg to help support the family. Helen worked at various jobs throughout the 1930s. In the early 1940s she found work at Eaton's. She worked there for over 30 years, mostly in the Notions Department where she was fondly known as the button and zipper lady . In 1951 Helen and her sister Jessie purchased a house on Dunrobin Avenue. Shortly after that, their mother and their sister Frieda moved in with them. Helen had a love of dogs, and during her time on Dunrobin was seldom without one. Helen remained in the house until 2003 when she decided to move to Donwood independent living, where she enjoyed the company of many of her longtime friends and relatives. In spring of 2010 she had a fall while visiting Carman, resulting in her being hospitalized with a broken ankle. She remained in Carman until her death. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Franz and Helena Pauls; stepfather Johann Martens; her sister Jessie Pauls; her brother Frank Pauls and his wife Corrie; and her sister Zelma Horch. Helen will be sadly missed by her sister Frieda Pauls, her brother-in-law Albert Horch and her many nephews and nieces and their families. Helen was a longtime member of the Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street. Private interment will take place prior to the service. If desired, donations may be made to Lighthouse Mission, Agape Table, Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of your choice. Heartfelt thanks to the staff of Donwood Manor and Carman Memorial Hospital.
