THELMA FLORENCE MCCONNELL (nee MCDOUGALL) December 6, 1912 - January 16, 2011 Peacefully on Sunday, January 16, 2011, at the Portage General Hospital, Thelma McConnell passed away at the age of 98 years. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter Ferne and partner Harold Mauthe; daughters-in-law Betty and Lynne; grandchildren Wendy (Jon) McDonald, Ryan (Laurel), Wade (Kerrie), David (Susanne), Edward (Jill) and Danielle; great-grandchildren KC, Connelly, Matthew, Samantha and Liam as well as nephews Gregory and Blaine. Thelma was predeceased by her husband Murray; sons John and Roy; grandson Timothy; brothers George and Robert and sister-in-law Ethel. Mom was born and raised on the family farm in the Tupper District near Plumas. As a young woman, she worked as a house maid and caregiver. On October 29, 1943, she married Murray and moved to the McConnell family farm in the Golden Stream District near Gladstone where they raised their three children, John, Roy and Ferne. Mom was a member of the W.I., the U.C.W., and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She had a sharp mind and a great memory right up to her passing. She enjoyed playing cards, reading the newspaper, doing the Free Press Jumble and working in her garden. She also enjoyed watching curling and baseball on TV. Mom's family was very important to her and she was always interested in what was going on in their lives. The family would like to thank the homecare workers, the doctors and nursing staff at Seven Regions Health Centre in Gladstone and the ICU staff in Portage District General Hospital for their excellent care. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Friday, January 21 at 2:00 p.m. in Gladstone United Church with Rev. Heather Lea officiating. Interment will follow at the Gladstone Cemetery. If friends so desire, a donation can be made to a charity of one's choice. Clarke's Funeral Home, Gladstone in care of arrangements. www.clarkesfuneralhome.com
