DOROTHY MILDRED FRANCIS (nee COMBERBACH) September 11, 1920 - January 14, 2011 With family by her side, our dear mum, grandma, great-grandma and auntie passed away peacefully at Victoria General Hospital. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Norman in 1988 and son Geoff in 2009. She was also predeceased by her parents Winnifred and Donald Comberbach, brothers Garnet, Alvin, Denny, Mert and sister Florence. Left to cherish Dorothy's memory are daughter-in-law Teresita Francis (Geoff), son Ken Francis (Donna), her grandchildren, Traci Turko (Calvin), Kenneth Francis (Natashia), Vangie Cabiles and Rogelio Cabiles (Mercy) and great-grandchildren, Shawn Francis, Roger Twovoice, Rachel Francis and Angelica Cabiles. Will always be sadly missed by niece Darlene Francis, sisters Millie Merritt, Esme Underhill and special little dog Renee. Dorothy will be remembered by her many relatives, her good friends who she valued for the time they took to visit her or just to phone and say hello, long time friend from school days Norma Ward, her next door neighbour Olga, hairdresser June, homecare worker Marion, and her most recent friend Loraine, her good friend Sam Minuk who cheered her up with his visits, telephone calls and support in her home when it was needed. He was truly a good friend to her. Dorothy's niece Darlene was also a very important part of her life as she got older. Dorothy very much looked forward to Sunday visits and appreciated the love and time taken to be a care provider and support person in her life. In younger years, she couldn't wait to get going on her garden. Dorothy and her neighbour Marge were in competition as to who could get their garden in first. She also loved reading books and as a dog lover, you would certainly find a dog greeting you at Dot and Norman's house. Her last dog Mandy was very special company for her when living by herself. Mum attended Winnipeg's Normal School and graduated as a secretary. She worked for many years at Powell Equipment, National Grain and as a executive secretary with Cargill Ltd. Family couldn't figure out what the funny squiggles on paper were until she said Oh that's my grocery list! She had written it out in short hand. A recent highlight was Mum's 90th birthday party on September 11. She was so happy for this birthday party, seeing all her family and friends together. Mum's greatest treasure was her family right up to the end of this earthly life. The family would like to thank the emergency staff and 4th floor staff of Victoria General Hospital for the tender care and compassion shown to her. A special thank you to the 5th floor staff at Poseidon Care for the kindness, care and support of Dorothy. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 21 at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 0R3.
