Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARJORIE JEAN SCHICK It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Marjorie Jean Schick on January 17, 2011. Mom was born March 2, 1921 in Elphinstone, MB, where she lived until the early 1930s when her family relocated to Winnipeg. Our mother Jean was a kind, yet strong woman. She graduated from Kelvin High School and went on to Margaret Eaton School in Toronto where she graduated with a degree in physical education. In 1941, Mom joined the army where she was a physical education instructor and earned the rank of Sergeant. Mom was one of only a handful of women to successfully complete full combat training. In 1945, she married Private George Schick. Mom is survived by her five children: Judith (Stan), Rhonda (Ron), Paul (Dorothy), Mark, and Karen (Greg). She was the world's greatest Grandma to Shannon, Jeff, Adam, Lindsay, Candice, Jaclyn, James, Luke and Stephanie as well as six great-granddaughters. She was predeceased by our father George, her brothers Grant and Ross, and her sister-in-law and best friend Nora. Our Mom loved being active. She was an accomplished swimmer, and as a youth spent countless hours swimming in the Red River behind their Morley Street home. She was a champion baseball player, as well as archery medal winner in Toronto. She curled, bowled and golfed as well as playing bridge and being an avid, if not somewhat creative , crib player. Mom was also an ardent lover of animals. She loved to ride horses and could never resist picking up and cuddling a cat or a dog. One of the few times we can remember Mom showing great sadness was with the passing of her friend and companion Taffy, who was by her side for almost 18 years. Mom was a long time member of The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. She taught Sunday school, as well as organized and ran summer Bible Camp. Mom was active with the Lutheran Women's Missionary league. Above all, Mom was a caregiver. Her family, and her responsibility to them, were the most important thing to her. Her military background was evident in the way she could organize and get five kids out the door to school, have the house spit and polished, the laundry done, and we were still greeted with the smell of fresh cookies when we got home from school. She was always willing to lend a hand, cook a meal, or open our home to someone who needed a place to stay. Once all her children left home she continued to care for her grandchildren and supply them a place to live well into her 80s. Our family would like to express sincere thanks to the staff of Tower 5 at the Deer Lodge Hospital for taking such good care of our Mom. The compassion and caring that was shown to Mom, and to her family will not be forgotten. A private family service was held January 18th. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made on Mom's behalf to the Winnipeg Humane Society. We are happy for her now as she is above the clouds, with the sun in her face.
