DR. RON BOWIE, FRCPC March 3, 1935 January 21, 2011 It is with great sadness that the family of James Frederick Rognvald (Ron) Bowie announce his passing on Friday, January 21, 2011 at the St. Boniface Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife Lena, his children Lena (David) and Keith (Irene and Nick) and his grandchildren Geoffrey, Hannah (Florent) and Dylan. Ron was born in Aberdeen, Scotland on March 3, 1935. He attended Aberdeen University, graduating in 1960 in Medicine. He obtained his CRCPC in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 1968 and his FRCPC in 1972. The Bowie family immigrated to Winnipeg in April, 1967, where Ron became an Associate Physician in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Manitoba Rehabilitation Hospital. He went on to be a professor and Director of the School of Medical Rehabilitation at the University of Manitoba. In 1980, he became an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine. From 1996 to 1998, he was the Acting Head of the Section of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, University of Manitoba and Health Sciences Centre. Ron's passion was teaching, and countless physical and occupational therapists and his former medical students recount the wonderful lectures and stories that Ron was always willing to share with them. Ron's other love was his cottage at Moose Lake, where he spent every summer for the past 40 years. He was always busy building, tinkering or gathering up members of his family to cut down old trees. Ron's last summer at the cottage was very important to him and he enjoyed every moment. Ron's family would like to thank the staff of 5E and Palliative Care for the wonderful attention, compassion and respect they expressed through their care. At Ron's request there will be no funeral service. A celebration of Ron's life will be held at the family cottage this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ron's memory to the Heart Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Foundation. Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com
