JOHN MARKES It is with heavy hearts that the family of John Markes announces his passing, at the age of 87, on January 24, 2011. He leaves behind his caring and loving wife, Bernice, of 58 years; two daughters, Barbara Markes, and Catherine Lewis; son-in-law, Donald Lewis; and granddaughters, Erin Lewis and Alison Lewis. Born January 19, 1924 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, John moved to Toronto in the late 1940s to work and attend night school. While in Toronto, he met Bernice Semple. They married in 1952 and lived in Sault Ste. Marie until 1993 when they moved to Winnipeg. John worked for 33 years for Canada Post. John taught his children the importance of working hard by example. He was a man of few words, but his faith in God, his love for his family, and his contentment in life is the legacy he has left for his children and grandchildren. John's family would like to express special thanks to the nursing and support staff from Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg who provided dedicated and loving care throughout Dad's stay, particularly so in Dad's last few weeks. A viewing will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street. A memorial service to celebrate the life of John Markes will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Grant Memorial Baptist Church (Waverly and Wilkes). A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Gideon Bible Society or a charity of one's choice.
