ABRAHAM MONKMAN (SHINGOOSE) Peacefully, with family by his side on Friday, January 28, 2011 at the Lakeshore General Hospital, Abraham Monkman, aged 94 years, passed away. Grandpa was born September 20, 1916 in a tent in Portage la Prairie, MB and spent his early childhood years in Vogar, MB. He moved his family to Eriksdale in 1961, lived and worked there until 1979, and then moved back to Vogar. Working was important to him and he emphasized this to his family. As a young man he had built a home in Centre Lake. Throughout his life he fished and trapped in the winter and was a farm hand in the summer. He was very proud of his Métis heritage. Grandpa also worked on the highways with Nelson River Construction from which he retired when he turned 65. Sports were a passion in Abraham's home. Hockey in the winter and baseball in the summer and according to him, one sport did not begin until the other had ended. He grew up playing baseball, was a pitcher for the Vogar Baseball Team and participated in boxing. Grandpa enjoyed watching his grandchildren playing hockey and baseball. Abraham is survived by his children, Margaret (Russell), Charles (Linda), Larry (Myna), Rhonda, Gladys, Florence (Lloyd), Eva and Jean; daughter-in-law Doreen; his siblings, Willie, Augustine and Rose; grandchildren, Kevin, Wade, Clinton, Vanessa, Jamie, Samara, Rainy, Chelsea, Summer, Russell, Richard, Renita, Raelene, Glenda, Arden, Shelly, Leah, Quentin, Lloyd, Darcy and Cary; many great-grandchildren and especially Kevin (The Boss), Aniya, Jenna, Deana, Jules, Kenneth, Jeremy and Jerelyn who came to visit him regularly. He will also be missed by many other family members, too numerous to mention. He is predeceased by his first wife Suzette Desjarlais in 1946; his wife Ida in 2001; an infant daughter; his parents, Caroline and Phillip Monkman; three sons, Albert, Louis, Raymond; his siblings, Edward, Lawrence, Harvey, Henry, Martha, Virginia and Irene. Wake service will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 31, 2011, at his residence in Vogar, MB. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at the Siglunes Community Hall with Pastor Bill Watson officiating. Interment to follow in the St. Francis Roman Catholic Cemetery. The family wishes to thank his Home Care workers, Marilyn Sveistrup, Bernice Lenarcik, Rose Bilkoski and Phyllis Thorlacius, the doctors, nurses and staff of the Lakeshore General Hospital and Lillian Pelletier. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • So sorry to find this so late, but I have to agree with Kelley's comment about "Working was important to him and he emphasized this to his family." He also made sure his friends knew this trait as well...while working for NRC my Dad was the Foreman but Abe was the educator of us young guys. I have many memories of life lessons in the tool shed over coffee. RIP my friend Abe! - Posted by: Brian Smith (Co-worker) on: Nov 07, 2020
