DAVID JAMES SWAN -
Date of Passing: Jan 29, 2011
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDAVID JAMES SWAN 1935 - 2011 Peacefully after a long illness, with his family by his side, David James Swan passed away on January 29, 2011. Dave is lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Beverley; son Ken and daughter-in-law Lilah; son Andrew and daughter-in-law Tamsin, and granddaughters Rhiannon and Catriona; nephews Bob Swan (Leslie) and Bruce Swan; and many good friends and neighbours. Dave was predeceased early in life by his mother Sarah and his father James. He was also predeceased by his twin brother Bill and sister-in-law Arlene of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Dave was born in Winnipeg and grew up in the West End. He graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute and soon began his career as an aircraft mechanic. After a short stint in Calgary with Canadian Pacific, Dave returned to Winnipeg and took a job with Trans-Canada Airlines. His 35 year career with TCA (later Air Canada) spanned all aircraft from Super Constellations and Vickers Viscounts to the Airbus. His favourite assignment was being part of a team tasked to restore TCA's first aircraft, a Lockheed 10A, which now flies to shows and events across North America. A reluctant traveler, Beverley convinced him to take two cruises to Alaska and bus tours to destinations as far as Cape Breton and the Grand Canyon. His favourite place to visit though was the Corbetts' cabin at Lester Beach where he and his best buddy George worked on many projects over the years. But his happiest place was the good home he provided for Beverley and the boys. He helped many neighbours over the years with yard work and repairs, which has been repaid many times over during his illness. Dave was a loving husband and father. He never missed an important event in his sons' lives and was a big part of his granddaughters' lives too. He enjoyed sports, especially CFL football, and became a real fan of Question Period from the legislature on TV. A celebration of Dave's life will take place Friday, February 4, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, Dave encourages his friends and neighbours to consider a donation to their favourite charity. The family would like to thank the professional and compassionate staff at Grace Hospital, especially the ICU, for their good care.
