JAMES ANDREW STEWART It is with great sadness that the family of Jim Stewart announce his sudden but peaceful passing at home on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the age of 83. Jim was born on December 1, 1927 in Viking, Alberta to Peter and Laura (Richardson) Stewart. He attended school in Viking until Grade 8 and then moved to Winnipeg to attend Kelvin High School. He worked at Kip Kelly until being accepted for an apprenticeship with the CNR. Jim worked for over 40 years as a Carman, first at the Transcona Shops and later at Symington yard. On June 2, 1956 Jim married Betty (Todd) and together raised three children. A loving and attentive father, Jim also believed in giving to his community. Jim was an active member of St. Joseph the Worker parish assisting with various events, sharing his carpentry skills when needed as well as being a past member of the Parish Council. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. A Scouter with Scouts Canada since the 1960s he worked with Scouts at the 4th Transcona Troop (St. Joseph the Worker), 7th Transcona Troop (Lutheran Redeemer) and 3rd Transcona Troop (Yale United). He held other positions in Scouting including District Commissioner Scouts. He was also a member of the BP Guild. Jim was a long-time member of the Transcona Garden Club (formerly the Transcona Horticultural Society) assisting with events and participating as a Board member. He also earned his designation as a horticultural judge and enjoyed travelling to various communities in order to fulfill those responsibilities. Until recently he volunteered with the Transcona Historical Museum Board. For the past 13 years, Jim volunteered at the Manitoba Museum, spending the last few years as an interpreter in the Nonsuch Gallery. He really enjoyed meeting the visitors who came from all over the world to see the museum, as well as the opportunity to learn more about our history. Jim had a lifelong love of learning, carpentry, reading and gardening. He has made many handcrafted gifts that will be treasured by the recipients for years to come. Jim believed that any job worth doing was worth doing well and without fanfare. Jim was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Betty in 2000, his brother, Duncan, sisters, Agnes Mudry and Mary Pringle, in-laws, James and Gertrude Todd and son-in-law, Donald Gothard. He will be dearly missed by his children, Janice (Neil) Williams of Halifax, Terrie (Les ) Douglas of Pigeon Lake, Alberta and Kevin (Lorne) Stewart of Toronto, grandchildren, Tyson Gothard of Halifax, Daria Douglas of Edmonton and David Douglas of Pigeon Lake and step-grandchildren, Katherine and Mairi Williams of Halifax. He is also survived by his brother, Leo (Joan) Stewart of Viking, Alberta and brother-in-law, Wayne (Shirley) Todd of North Delta, BC. Prayer service will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2 at St. Joseph the Worker Church, 505 Brewster St., Transcona. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Janice, Terrie, Kevin, I am thinking of you as you mourn the loss of your Dad. One of my fondest memories of him was him driving us home from swimming lessons and our rubber plant being named after him--Stewart. I am sure his contribution to the scouting movement in Transcona will have touched many lives. My prayers and thoughts are with you all. - Posted by: Cathy Falconer (Friend) on: Feb 01, 2011
