ISABELLE LAIRD MILES (nee MacLean) Peacefully, in the early morning hours of January 8, 2011, Isabelle left us. Isabelle will be fondly remembered by her brother Bob (Dorothy) MacLean; sister-in-law Elsie (Cam) MacLean; nephew Cam MacLean (Jr) and his wife Joy and their two children, Campbell and Joanna; nephew Brett Buckingham; David Miles and his wife Stephanie; numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins; and her good friends Gerri McLean and Chris Hashimoto. Isabelle was predeceased by her husband Lew, her parents, her two sisters, Alexandra (Buck) Buckingham and Georgette (Paul) Fee, and her brother Cam (Elsie) MacLean. Born in St. Boniface, Manitoba on February 1, 1914, Isabelle was the daughter of Jean and George C. MacLean, mayor of St. Boniface for 18 years. After graduating from business college, Isabelle enjoyed a varied career, first at the Winnipeg Electric Company and then with CJGX, a Yorkton, Saskatchewan radio station with a remote broadcast facility in Winnipeg. At the station she was an on-air host of a ladies' program and a recording engineer. Isabelle then lived for a year in Yorkton, but left radio, returned to Winnipeg, and worked for American Motors before moving over to assist her husband with what became the well known Lew Miles Las Vegas Charters. She spent many winters in Las Vegas meeting and assisting travellers to ensure that their holidays were most enjoyable. Isabelle married the love of her life, Lew, in 1954. She happily recollected their dating in an era when the thing to do was to spend a summer evening parked downtown along Portage Avenue watching the people strolling there. Lew and she liked to dance and Lew was a great dancer. Isabelle suffered a great loss when Lew passed away in 1994. Isabelle was a self-confident and capable person with a strong spirit and a generous nature. She was known and loved for her wry sense of humour, and her willingness and ability to give wise and practical advice to those in need. Special thanks to the wonderful Laddy, Sally, Emily, Esther and Carmelita for the attention, comfort and love they gave to Isabelle, and above all to Gerri for her friendship and her determined and invaluable support. A service was held at the Rabbi Louis Berkel Chapel at Shaarey Zedek, Winnipeg on Monday, January 10. In lieu of flowers a contribution may be made to the Lew and Isabelle Miles Memorial Fund, C400 - 123 Doncaster, Winnipeg, R3N 2B2, or a charity of one's choice.
