CHARLES REUBEN (RUBE) HICOCK On February 6, 2011 after a brief illness, Rube, beloved husband of Anita, passed away at Concordia Hospital at age 88. Rube was born on February 23, 1922 in Deloraine, Manitoba. Rube is survived by Anita, his wife of 58 years, his five children, son Ray, son Wayne (friend Kim), son Earl (Susan), daughter Kathy (Mike) Schmidt, daughter Lorrie (Doug) Neill: his grandchildren Justin (Jenn) Hicock, Danielle (Gavin) Fifi, Bryson, Caleb and Celeste Hicock, Kurtis (friend Sophia) and Tyler Schmidt, Cory (friend Ashley) and Alyssa Neill, Precious (Shane) Gauthier and Joel Murrell; two great-grandchildren - twins Sam and Nyla Hicock, sisters-in-law Ann Hill and Alice Hill, as well as nine nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Clinton and Annie Hicock, his brothers Norman, Norris (wife Connie), and Fletcher; his in-laws Alex and Alvina Hill and brothers-in-law Eddie and Harvey Hill. Rube was raised on a farm near Deloraine, went to a one-room Bidford School, and at age 14, started working for area farmers. In 1942, he enlisted in the R.C.A.F. (Construction and Maintenance) and got his electrical training as a lineman, working at many training centres across Western Canada, Yukon and Alaska. He was discharged October 5, 1945 and on November 10 joined Manitoba Power Commission (now Manitoba Hydro) working on crews for the new rural electrification program. In 1949, he got his first District Supervisor job in Whitemouth, where he met and later married Anita (Hill) on May 10, 1952. They spent a year in Steinbach, before moving to Transcona in 1957, where he was District Supervisor until he retired in 1981. Rube always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Where there was a good time to be had, you can be sure Rube was close by to lead the cheer. Everybody was always welcome to join in the fun, the more the merrier. Rube was very involved in the Community. He curled for many years, belonged to the Kinsmen Club, Hydro X, and the Transcona Legion. He also enjoyed working with kids in sports, where he volunteered for many years with various baseball and hockey organizations. Rube was also an avid sports fan where he enjoyed season tickets with the Blue Bombers (attended 15 Grey Cups), Winnipeg Jets, Manitoba Moose and Goldeyes baseball. The family is grateful to our many wonderful friends and family. A very special thank you to the staff at River East Personal Care Home for the wonderful care, genuine concern, and their sincere kindness and compassion given to Rube during his stay there. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., on Friday, February 11, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Jeff Cook officiating. Those wishing to honour Rube's memory may contribute to either the Rainbow Society, 303-1 Wesley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4C6 or the River East Personal Care Home Recreation Fund, 1375 Molson St., Winnipeg, MB R2K 4K8.
