PAUL KARL AUSBORN With heavy hearts the family announce the passing of Paul Karl Ausborn on February 7, 2011, at Kildonan Personal Care Centre. Paul was predeceased by first wife Marie with whom he had four children: Margaret Rasmussen (Randy), Dianna Hatley (John), Dorothy Garrett, and William Ausborn. Paul was fortunate in that he found and was able to share his life with Elsie, who became his second wife. They celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary in 2010! Paul was the proud stepfather to Joyce Harmacy (John) and Edith Snyder (Bill). Paul also took pride and joy in his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Paul was born March 7, 1919, in Kiel, Germany. His family immigrated to Canada, settling in Foxwarren, Manitoba in 1928. In 1934 he moved to Winnipeg where he attended St. John's Technical High School and graduated in 1937. He had a rich and varied career, first working as a dishwasher in a gold mine at Kerr-Addison mines in Northern Ontario. In 1938 he took a job with Manitoba Sugar where he learned the art of making sugar from sugar beets. He became supervisor of that plant. In 1947 Paul joined the C.N.R. as a yardman. With hard work and dedication he advanced to become Superintendent of Transportation, Prairie Region. Paul retired from the C.N.R. in 1977. Paul's military career included 3rd Armoured Corp. and 13th Provost Corp. He stayed in the reserve after the war for two and one half years and was recalled in 1950, for flood duty. Paul was an active volunteer. He was first executive director of the Manitoba Lodges and Outfitters. He served as President of the Grandin Home and School Association. He was Vice-President of Melville and of The Pas Legion. In Melville he served on the Chamber of Commerce and on the Hospital Board. More recently he served for three years as President of the Oakland Garden Senior Club. Paul and Elsie loved to travel. They spent winters in Cyprus and Spain; also visited England, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Israel, Egypt, Gibraltar and North Africa. They also spent winters in Mesa and Palm Springs. They traveled from coast to coast in Canada with their trailer. An ardent outdoorsman, hunting and fishing in the North with his son-in-law John Hatley and his three sons was Paul's prime holiday pastime over a span of 30 years. In his younger years he boxed as a middleweight and played soccer in second division. His wisdom, his humour but most of all his love will be ever missed. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Klassen Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place, with a burial to take place at a later date.
