Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARION EFFIE GRANT 1917 - 2011 It's with great sadness that the family announces that Marion passed away on Monday, February 7, 2011. While sad, we're thankful that she passed peacefully and without pain. She'll be lovingly remembered by her sons Don and Bob (Val), grandsons Blake and Brian (Anna) and great-grandson Liam. Also by her sister Hilda Doran, nephews Jamie (Karen) Doran, Ralph (Liz) Doran, Dan Doran, Grant (Cookie) Kimmett, Dale (Marg) Kimmett and nieces Berniece (Alvin) Pattem, Mary (Rick) Potter, Dorothy (Doug) Harpell and all their families and her many friends across the country. Marion was predeceased by husband Doug in 1962, her parents Robert and Clara (Davis) Tackaberry and brother Harold. Marion was born in Winnipeg on September 14, 1917 and grew up and went to school in Kenora, Ontario. She worked for the Kenora Public Library before moving to Toronto where she met Doug after his return from the war. They were married in Kenora on January 10, 1951 and soon moved briefly to Saskatoon with Doug's employer, the Bank of Nova Scotia. They moved to Winnipeg and then Calgary, returning to Winnipeg for good in 1956, residing on Fidler Avenue in Silver Heights until 1984 when she moved to Birchwood Terrace where she stayed until early last year. Summers in the 1950s and 1960s were spent at the family cottage on Longbow Lake where she loved spending time with her hometown friends and her lake neighbours. After Doug passed away she worked for the St. James-Assiniboia Library for many years, retiring at age 65. She loved to travel to eastern Canada every fall to visit her sister. She made many friends there and also took trips on the Rideau Canal, to the Maritimes and Jamaica and down the Oregon Coast. In recent years her favourite place to go was the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre. Mom loved her sports and was a Bombers season ticket holder for years. She especially loved the Maple Leafs and the Jets, and during baseball season she rarely missed a Blue Jays game on TV. Curling may have been her all-time favourite and rest assured she'd be watching every tournament or Briar, much of the time on the phone with best friend Bessie in Kenora while they watched and discussed every shot and strategy! She was always up for a game of cribbage or bridge. Marion was a charter member of Silver Heights United Church and devoted much of her time there to charitable causes. She did fundraising for Grace Hospital construction and Silver Heights Community Club, charity work for Meals on Wheels and charitably supported the Firefighters Burn Fund, Winnipeg Police Dept. Youth Programs, Salvation Army, Siloam Mission, Prairie Public TV and Ducks Unlimited Canada. Marion will be missed by all. She constantly put everyone else's needs before her own and was always there to lend a helping hand to family and friends. The family would especially like to thank Mom's good friends Carol and Ian at Birchwood Terrace for looking out for her for so many years and extending her so many kindnesses. A small graveside memorial service will be held for family and close friends in May. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Marion's name to the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre.

Very sad -- and what a lovely tribute. I never knew Marion, but, oh, how I wish she were alive to hear the news I have to share. I am a researcher specializing in the air war in the Far East in WWII. Marion's brother, Harold Tackaberry, went missing with his 117 Sqn Dakota crew during a supply drop to Myitkyina, Burma on 1 June 1944. The 7 who died (1 Australian, 2 Canadians, and 4 British) have no known graves. I'd researched the loss for the brother of one of the British victims, but because the wreckage was never found, I could only go so far with the investigation. And then several days ago an Indian posted that the wreck of Harold's plane has been found by hunters in dense mountainous jungle in India close to the Burma border. Furthermore, an engraved bracelet belonging to Harold was found in the wreckage. It bears his name and RCAF service number. I WISH TO REACH MARION'S SONS, BOB AND DON, AND MARION'S SISTER, HILDA DORAN, IF POSSIBLE, OR HER IMMEDIATE FAMILY. This is no joke, and I am a serious researcher with years of work helping the families of the missing. With luck, ultimately, Harold's remains will be recovered; the hunters said that there are visible remains at the site. Please write me at feb2944 AT aol DOT com (making the necessary changes to the email address). I will not let you down. Thank you, and to those who knew Marion, I am sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Matt Poole (None) on: Sep 21, 2017
