ALLEN MACKLIN 1929 - 2011 Passed away at home, peacefully on February 11, 2011. Allen will be greatly missed by his wife Agnes, his sons Hartley (Deborah), Richard (Lisa) and David (Reagan), grandchildren Gabrielle, Maxie, Sarah, Chloe, Ben, Lyla and Eden, and sister Bernice Marmel. He was predeceased by his parents Samuel and Rose and brothers Gerald and Joseph. Allen was born in Winnipeg, the youngest of four children. He is an alumnus of the Winnipeg Jewish Orphanage. Later Allen attained a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Manitoba and Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Alberta. Allen loved practicing and teaching dentistry. His dental career spanned 50 years (two of which were spent in Israel). Allen thoroughly enjoyed sitting around the dinner table watching his family kibitz. He was proud of his children and grandchildren, was an avid follower of world current affairs, played a mean game of tennis and loved to play bridge. Allen came from modest beginnings but became the first member of a large immigrant family to achieve two university degrees and, by the time of his death, had travelled five continents. The family thanks pallbearers Bryan and Jonathan Glass, Bill and Scott Margolis, Fraser Aronovitch, and David Greaves, as well as honourary pallbearers Richard Bass, Dr. Allen Becker, Dr. Sam Borden, Joe Freed, Matthew Glass, Norman Gould Ted Hechter, Dr. Ruebin Kaufman, Dr. Sandy Muchmor, David Pollock, Frank Rowan, Val Wowryk. The Macklin family wishes to thank nurse Trish and caregivers Wendy and Kim and all the Home Care staff for their attention and love towards Allen. The Shaarey Zedek exceeded our already high expectations in its handling of the funeral and ancillary services. The family is observing a private shiva. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Allen Macklin Memorial Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba or other charity of choice.
