HAROLD GEORGE ASMUNDSON After a lengthy battle, Harold George Asmundson passed away February 13, 2011 at Riverview Health Centre, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Harold will be missed by his loving wife of 31 years, Norma (nee Mote); his sons, Blaine (Monika), Kerrin, Zakary, Leith (Amanda), Robert Richard (Jennifer); his daughters, Rose-Lynn (Walter Peters) and Jana Richard (Gerald); grandchildren, Tiffany Linh (Chi), Tysenn, Brayden, Keenan, Kaed and Ainsley. Also left to treasure his memory are his brother Harvey (Caroline); and his sisters, Solveig Gibson, Asta Mitchell, Clara Hadfield, Laura Zanewich, Helga Gibson and Elizabeth Hicks (Clare); his brother-in-law Joseph Brown and many nieces and nephews. Harold is predeceased by his parents, Asmundur and Kristbjorg Asmundson; his wife Judith (nee Brown); grandson Clay Asmundson; brother Edward; sisters, Anna Burnell, Frances Brown, Krisjana Zaporzan and several brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law. Harold was born October 15, 1944 in Gladstone, Manitoba, the youngest of 12 children. He had many happy times growing up along the Whitemud River near Westbourne, Manitoba. Harold moved to St. John, New Brunswick, where he met his first love Judith Brown. They wed, moved back to Manitoba and added two beautiful children, Blaine and Rose-Lynn to their union. Tragically, Judith died in 1973. Later, Harold met his second love, Norma. They wed in 1979 and welcomed sons, Kerrin, Zakary and Leith and daughter Jana. They spent much of their married life in Elva, Manitoba, and moved to Winnipeg in 2003. Harold was always a hard worker, and instilled that value in all of his children. He worked in construction from the age of 17, receiving his journeyman certification for carpentry. He also loved to share his love of building with others, receiving his teachers certificate, and teaching in various locations around the province. He taught all of his children how to swing a hammer and the importance of quality workmanship. Upon retirement, Harold continued to work, volunteering his time to CancerCare Manitoba and Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba. Always a family man, Harold's greatest joy was being with his children and grandchildren. Even as his health deteriorated, he found great pleasure in playing with his grandchildren. Each of his children has special memories of spending time with him playing sports, singing along while he played guitar, going for picnics or fishing. Harold found great peace in his faith in his God Jehovah. He looked forward to living in paradise in restored health. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Wheeler Funeral Chapel, 211 Regent Avenue West, Winnipeg, Manitoba on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba, 4 Fort Street, Ste. 100, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
