Hi Constance. We have three things in common. Our fathers were pediatricians in Chuqui (the only two), the second, we were born there, Incredible place in that time, me a little later than you. And the third, we knew Luisa Varela, a young made who came to Chuqui in the '50s. Start to work at your home, and after that, with my parents in house 404 of Campamento Americano. “Luchita” for me, 86, is still alive and remember you an your sisters, father and mother clearly. I know what happened with your family. Ill try to phone you but it was not possible, the phone number of la merced doesn't exist. What about your Spanish? Try to answer (or somebody of your family) and be healthy. Best wishes, Luis - Posted by: Luis Echaniz (Parents worked in Chuquicamata) on: Aug 18, 2020

Very belatedly I have learned of her passing. My memories go a long way back to the 1940s when I was a teacher in Chuquicamata. Since I knew her parents, and most of the parents, well, we enjoyed a certain easy relationship. I shall never forget the time she and a friend were studying for the geography test I would be giving the next day. A fellow teacher and I found them looking at a map, so we asked them the distance from Britain to Australia. When they answered, we said they were wrong -- it was only 8 inches. They weren't sure how to take us. The next morning I included a special question at the end of Renee's test paper. The distance from Britain to Australia is _____________. I was watching as she came to that last question. She looked at me and grinned while mouthing "You!" I've never forgotten that moment. - Posted by: Ruth (Wheelock) Matheny (Her teacher in Chuquicamata) on: Mar 03, 2015
