Born: Jul 21, 1922
Date of Passing: Feb 20, 2011
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARIA JARKO Maria Jarko slipped away peacefully on February 20, 2011 in Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, BC. She is survived by her family in Vancouver: daughter Oksana Richards (William), granddaughters Katja and Natalie (Chris), and great-granddaughter Siena. She was predeceased by her husband Rev. Deacon Michael Jarko, her brother Bohdan and sister Jaroslawa. For Maria, it was the end of a long journey from Ukraine, through war-torn Europe, to the Canadian prairies and finally the West Coast. Maria was born July 21, 1922 in Werczany, near Strij in Ukraine. Together with her husband Michael Jarko, she escaped just ahead of the Second World War battle front. En route in Slovakia, she gave birth to her daughter Oksana, fleeing the town Pezinok mere days before the street where she gave birth was bombed. The Jarko family settled in Winnipeg where Maria lived for almost half a century. Maria was very active in Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic parish where she was head of the parish council. She also held many executive positions in the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League, including correspondence secretary of the national executive. After the death of her husband Rev. Deacon Michael Jarko, Maria moved to North Vancouver. Here she lived very closely with her family and enriched their lives. Together with her family, she travelled extensively, cruising to Alaska and in Europe, holidaying in Mexico, the U.S. and many parts of BC. She especially enjoyed the orchards and vineyards of the Okanagan, as well as the eagles which circle the family recreational property on Galiano Island. Maria never forgot her young days in Ukraine. She always prayed that Ukraine would achieve economic prosperity and true independence. Maria is making one more stop in her journey: back to Winnipeg to be buried at the side of her husband Rev. Deacon Michael Jarko. Funeral services will be held at Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Parish, 263 Fountain St. with Panachyda prayers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25 and Divine Liturgy at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 26. Interment at All Saints Cemetery will follow.
