STEVE ZUBECK It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Steve. He passed away peacefully on Friday, February 18, 2011 at the Grace Hospital at the age of 84 years. Left to mourn Steve's memory is son Gary and his sisters Annie, Helen and Katherine. He was very well liked by all who knew him and will be remembered for his love of animals, good common sense and easy manner. Peter Zubeck, Steve's father, emigrated from the Ukraine to Canada as a young man. Peter changed his last name from Chuby to Zubeck for political reasons. He met his wife Mary Kelody in Belus, AB, started a family, and moved to Port Moody, BC. There he worked for the CP Rail, BC Electric, and owned a pool hall in Port Moody. They had five children: Annie, Nellie, Steve, Katherine and Helen. Steve was born October 26, 1926 in New Westminister, BC. His mother died when he was a young boy of eight. Steve was a very good pool player all his life. He had a difficult relationship with his father and left home at the age of 15 to join the Merchant Marines where he traveled all over the world as a teenager including Australia, England, and South America. Steve joined the army, where he was trained to become an excellent cook. He met his wife Betty June Pearn in London, ON, where they were married in 1951. They had one son, Gary, who was born in 1951 in London, ON. After living in Kitchener and Guelph, they moved to Winnipeg in 1959. Steve and Betty owned their own restaurant on Pembina Highway called Steve's Grill. He later worked many years as a salesman for Furnaceman. The family moved to Charleswood in 1968, where Steve worked installing swimming pools and building homes. He was a great jack of all trades and was accomplished at carpentry, plumbing and electrical work. Betty and Steve divorced in 1980 and he never remarried. Steve loved to play golf, darts, billiards and shuffleboard. He joined the Rockwood Legion where he was a dedicated member for most of his life and played on all their competitive teams against other Legions. In his retirement years, Steve worked as caretaker in several apartment blocks. Other than one year when he temporarily moved to Peachland, BC, he lived the rest of his life in Winnipeg. Unfortunately Steve suffered from dementia in his later years which were spent at Riverview Hospital and Deer Lodge Hospital where he received excellent health care. In compliance with Steve's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. di te incolumem custodiant May the Gods guard your safety
