JAN VAN LEEUWEN Jan (John) van Leeuwen peacefully passed away on March 2, 2011 at Deer Lodge Centre. Jan was predeceased by Nellie (nee Van Nus) his wife of 40 years whom he missed deeply, sister, Willempje deRooy, sister Alida and brothers, Cornelis, Gijsbertus, and Hendrik. He is survived by his five sons and their families: Gilbert (Linda), (Ashley Stewart (Robert), Abigail, Gabriel, Zackary, Savanna), Stacey, Emily, Thomas; Timothy (Joyce), Amanda, Cole, Levi; John (Veronica), Jonathan, Jeremy, Hannah, Rebekah; Steven (Kryna), Alicia, Andrea, Helena, Carmen; Paul (Merika), Jordan, Madison, Kylee, Kaden. and siblings Sister Johanna van Heyst (Karl) and Willemijntje van Barneveld and brothers Teunis and Roelof (Jane). Jan was born in Ijsselmonde, the Netherlands. He emigrated from the Netherlands to Canada as a young man with his parents and his extended family in 1954. Jan worked in tree nurseries and market gardens and joined his father and brothers in the family construction business doing roofing, lath and plaster, drywall and insulation. Along with his brother Hank he spent many years doing home renovations and small construction projects. Jan loved life and family, enjoying time with his children and grandchildren hosting them every Sunday at his home. He lived much of his life outside the city on an acreage; gardened and raised various animals. As a breeder of fancy pigeons he won many awards and trophies. He looked forward to coffee with the guys on Monday mornings; he loved his church and sought to be an obedient servant to his heavenly father. It brings us great comfort to know Dad is at home with the Lord and breathing easy. Our deep thanks goes to the staff at Deer Lodge Centre and Riverview Health Centre. All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever. 1 Peter 1:24-25 Viewing to be held at Green Acres Funeral Home, Monday March 7, 11:00 a.m., interment to follow at 12:00 p.m.; Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m. at Providence Reformed Church, 2615 Henderson Highway, reception to follow.
