She attended school first at Finns and later at the North Arnes School, often going by dog team or by horse and sleigh in the winter and walking in the summer. She married the love of her life, Einar on November 7, 1953. Einar and Gertie settled in Hnausa, MB and resided there until November 2007 when she moved to the Betel Home in Gimli due to health problems. In addition to raising their family on the farm they also owned and operated the Hnausa Transfer for 30 years. Mom enjoyed many hobbies such as sewing, knitting and cross-stitch. She loved gardening and always had beautiful flowers around her home and yard but more than anything she cherished her family. She was extremely proud of her family and their accomplishments. Mom loved cooking and baking and never missed an opportunity to serve up a feast so that she could have her family together. She was well known for her delicious pies, cinnamon buns, ponnukokurs and many other types of dainties. Mom thoroughly enjoyed having someone come over for a visit. Her door was always open with the coffee and dainties on the table. Gertie was active in the community as a 4-H leader teaching sewing and cooking for 18 years, serving on the Hnausa Community Hall committee, the Hnausa Reflections history book committee, and member of the Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran Church Alter Guild as well as various other committees. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Betel Home in Gimli and to Dr. R. C. Patel and staff at the Gimli Community Health Centre for the kindness and caring provided. Special thanks to all who visited and spent time with Mom the last few years. Your visits meant so much to her.
