HENRY JOSEPH BASARABA It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Father, Grandfather, and Uncle Henry (Bass) Basaraba on March 7, 2011 at Golden Door Geriatric Centre in Winnipeg. Dad was born to a large family January 16, 1923 near Sifton, MB but was relocated at a young age to the Basaraba homestead just east of Onanole, MB near Riding Mountain. He leaves to mourn his daughter Donna Friesen of Kenora, ON and son Craig Basaraba, wife Vicki, grandchildren Desiree, Dustin, and Madison of Clandeboye, MB. As well, sister Olive Wiley, niece Darlene Stinson and husband Jim, were all very involved with Dad's illness challenges and care during the past four years and most importantly during his last days. Dad has many nieces and nephews from various parts of the country that have also stayed in touch and visited him over the years. Henry joined the military in 1941 as the Second World War was underway and served proudly for four years where his leadership skills were quickly evident. He achieved the level of Sergeant Major due to his desire to train and protect the men in his unit. Henry met and married our mom Margaret Guppy from Toronto (deceased six years ago) where they shared the family home in Winnipeg until separating in 1972. He is also predeceased by his longtime companion, Isabelle Verbrugge with whom he shared many exciting trips and trading loonies while playing cards. After returning to civilian life, Dad stayed on with the Department of National Defence as the Upholstery Shop foreman until retiring. He also operated his own business, Bass Upholstery for many years and was exceptionally skilled at his trade. When not working, Dad loved hunting, fishing, and spending time with some favourite relatives and buddies. He finally moved out to his cabin at Breezy Point full time where he developed many very close friendships while searching for that perfect walleye. So for those of us still here on earth Henry's office is closed BASS GONE FISHING!!! Cremation has taken place as per Dad's wishes and a memorial celebration with family and friends will be announced and will take place at a later date.
