Jim was born January 24, 1931 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Henry Young born in Scotland and Kathleen Young (nee Mullen) born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In his early years he was a professional hockey player drafted by the New York Rangers but his choice was to raise a family. Jim was employed by the Manitoba Liquor Commission for 35 years. While working and living in Souris for several years Jim developed his passion for golf. He enjoyed every minute of his 25 years of retirement. He was heavily involved in Transcona Ringette for many years where he met his best of friends that he fondly called the East End Gang. He could be found enjoying the outdoors on his deck with a drink in hand.
