KAREN HALWAS It is with profound sadness that the family of Karen Halwas, of Headingley, Manitoba, announce her passing on March 9, 2011 at the Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. Karen was the mother of David (Colleen), and Darlene Halwas, the very proud grandmother of Virginia Gold, Darian, and Jarek Halwas, and the sister of Lynne Ewbank, all of Calgary. She was predeceased by former husband Daryl Halwas, infant son Donald Halwas, partner Arnold Bremner, and her parents. The younger sister of Lynne, Karen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba during the war when her father was in the Air Force, stationed in Gimli. After the war, the family moved to Birtle, Manitoba where she developed a lifelong affection for visiting and baking, especially when both were combined. She married Daryl Halwas in 1961, and moved to Russell, Manitoba, where her children were born. It was also there she joined the elusive Eight Ender Club during her days as an avid curler. The family moved to St. Francois Xavier in 1970. In 1980, she moved to Headingley, where she lived until her passing. Karen was known in the community as a selfless volunteer, caring friend, and amazing cook. She had many wonderful times with family and friends playing crib, fishing, visiting, and traveling. A good book was never far from her finger tips. Her hearty laugh brightened up the darkest room, and made everyone feel welcome. New friends were made with the same ease that old friends were kept. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Peter Lougheed Hospital for their wonderful care during her lengthy stay. A memorial service will be held at the Headingley United Church on March 19 at 2:00 p.m. with a tea to follow. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
