GORDON ELMER MONKMAN (A.K.A. RED) During the peaceful, quiet hours of the morning, as he drew his last breath, Red was called home to Paradise on Saturday, March 19, 2011 just five days short of his 84th birthday. Dad was born and lived most of his life on the farm homestead and in Scanterbury. His commitment to hard work showed in his various occupations as a commercial fisherman, farmer and in his earlier years as a logger, all of which he thoroughly enjoyed. He lived his retirement years in Selkirk where his days were spent at the River Boat Restaurant having coffee and conversation with his many friends and family. After suffering a stroke in 2009, Dad spent the remaining time at Red River Place where regardless of the pain or restrictions he endured, when asked how he was doing he was quick to respond Not bad for an old man with a smile. Our Sundays won't be the same without our visits and hymn sing with you dad. Dad was predeceased by his parents Campbell and Agnes (Walker), siblings Kenneth, Lawrence, and Dorothy. He leaves to mourn his sister Irene; brother Wilfred (Bev); son John; daughters, Gail (Cristina), Lorraine (John), Dorothy, Ruth (Kevin), Corinne (Allen), 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the caring and compassionate staff of Red River Place who worked so hard to make him comfortable during his stay. As per dad's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 23 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk, MB. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
