LUCY BARBARA LINDELL (nee APPLEBEE) On Wednesday, March 16, 2011, the 77th anniversary of their wedding day, Lucy passed to her eternal rest at the Eriksdale Personal Care Home in Eriksdale, Manitoba. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Art; son David; grandson Curtis; son-in-law Bruce; her parents Charles and Barbara; sister Vi Robinson; eight brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews and many friends. Left to cherish Lucy's memory are her daughter Elaine Henrotte and her children, Beverly (Robert), Carol (Norman), Lois, and Sharon (Elwin); granddaughter, Amber; daughter and son-in-law Shirley (Rick) Lawrence and their children Cam (Michelle) and Karmen (Jason); son and daughter-in-law Garry (Sandra) and their children Christy (Jason) and Paul (Christine). Lucy is also survived by 22 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Anne Lindell along with many nieces and nephews and friends. Lucy was born in Winnipeg on February 28, 1911. At the age of six, she moved with her parents and sister Vi to a farm in the Hartfield District of Eriksdale. And, yes, she really did walk four miles each way to high school, and later, to work. In 1925 their father lost his leg. Coupled with hard times and money practically non-existent, this was a difficult time for the farming family. It became a way of life for all to dig in until the jobs were completed. There was ample opportunity to develop the skills and traits of hard work, resilience, creativity, frugality, industry and cooperation that would give Lucy the strength and determination to try almost anything and not to settle for less than success. On March 16, 1934 she and Art Lindell were married. As soon as they were able, they moved to their own little house on land south of Hartfield that together they worked into a bustling, busy farm where they raised the four of us. It would take every bit of strength, ingenuity, love and cooperation they had and Lucy made wonderful use of what she had learned as a child. She could see potential in almost anything, whether it started out as a piece of fabric, a plant or tree or seed, pen and paper, a piece of fruit, an old chair, an old church, a patch of ground, a child. At the same time she was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend (and later, grandmother). Lucy was an active community member; there is evidence of her efforts still with us today in Eriksdale. She was a founding member of the Eriksdale Credit Union, initiated the development of McEwen Park and helped the Eriksdale Co-op get started. She spent many hours letter writing in support of various community issues. The St. John's Market and the first Eriksdale Museum came to be as a result of her efforts, along with others. Lucy worked with many people in the community on various projects and committees. Lucy always loved to write. She wrote many short stories and poems, contributed to the Stonewall Argus as a community news writer for many years, planned, arranged and published a history book Memory Opens The Door and at the age of 89, completed and published the story of her life Rites Of Passage . After a busy, involved and productive life Lucy entered the Personal Care Home in August, 2005. At this time we, her family, would like to express our sincere thanks to all the staff for their patience, understanding and T.L.C. she received there as well as the many kindnesses and helpfulness shown to us over the years. Cremation has taken place and a service celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Eriksdale Recreational Centre with Melanie Kauppila officiating. Interment will be held at the Eriksdale Municipal Cemetery. Lucy, at the age of 100 years and 16 days, left us to be reunited with Art, David, Curtis and all the others gone before. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Canada, Suite 601, 2221 Yonge St., Toronto, ON M4S 2B4, or to a charity of choice in her memory. May she rest in peace.
