During the early afternoon of Saturday, March 19, 2011 dad quietly passed away at the Grace Hospital with his family by his side. He was predeceased by his parents, Yet Han Charles and Hong My Lem Yuen and sister Lew San. Left to celebrate his life is his wife Soo Lum Judy, children Nancy (Gary), Edmond (Marion), Howard (Tara), Susana, grandchildren Dylan (Dayna), Eric, Eastyn, Nicole, Stephanie, Vanessa, great-grandchildren Chloe, Patrick, sister Mei Gim and nephew Simon (Linda), their children Danny, Diane, Dale, brothers-in-law Sun (Poi Tai), Frank (Lydia), Shing (Jessica), Ken, sister-in-law Tanya (Ray) plus numerous relatives and friends. Dad was born in Toisan, Province of China in 1933. He met and married mom in 1950. He followed his father to Canada to help him with a café in Oxbow, Saskatchewan and later in Kenton, Manitoba. Dad and mom eventually settled in Winnipeg in 1960 where he operated a café on Corydon Avenue across from the MTS building. He was later employed by the Canadian National Railway as a galley cook on the Winnipeg to Vancouver run. Not wanting to be away from his wife and children, he purchased a restaurant located on the corner of Main and Higgins known as the Empress Café which they operated for 15 years. There, dad and mom toiled long hours serving everything from beef short ribs to chop suey. With the success of the café, dad was able to focus on another business venture namely Peking Chinese Foods located on Corydon Avenue which opened its doors on November 7, 1970 to present. Dad loved to cook and mingle with the customers. His family and business were the focus of his life. Even though dad and mom officially retired from the restaurant in September of 1999, they were still actively involved in the operation. One of dad's favourite pastimes was the sport of kings, horse racing. He owned several thoroughbreds, Like Til, Our Mark, Atomic Storm, What A Blaze, Golden Return just to name a few. He could be found every Sunday afternoon sitting with his family and friends in the clubhouse studying the racing form. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the firefighters, paramedics, doctors, nurses, and staff at both Victoria Hospital (Resuscitation Unit) and Grace Hospital (Intensive Care Unit). Our family sincerely thanks you for your caring and compassion during dad's final moments. Also, special thanks to Dr. T. S. Luk and the staff at the Linden Ridge Medical Clinic who enabled dad to have the quality of life he did.
