She was born on May 21, 1919 to Ernest and Karin Peterson at their home in the Alpine district, the second daughter of Swedish immigrant parents. She is survived by her son John, daughters Lynn (Kim) Sharpe and Louise (John) Schabert and grandchildren Jennifer and Jerry Sharpe; Sara, Erika, Marcie and John Schabert. She is also survived by sisters Annie Peterson, Elvie Garnett, Edith Peterson, numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Also Ted Sandborn, Hildur (Ronald) Wilson, Milton Sandborn, Edmund Sandborn (Lillian Sandborn), Ruth (Cameron) Currie and Dorothy (Robert) Smith. Bessie attended school in Alpine and after finishing Grade eight went to work for other farm families as a mother's helper . In 1952 she married Harry Sandborn and together raised their family on the Sandborn homestead in Alpine. Mom and dad's travels to Sweden allowed her to use her skills in Swedish. She loved cooking. Baking bread, cinnamon buns, cookies and fresh rhubarb pies were her specialties. Knitting mittens, socks and scarves was a year-round activity that was appreciated by all who received them. She enjoyed the social activity and friendships involved with the United Church Women, the Order of Eastern Star, the Senior Centre and Legion bingos. Her grandchildren were loved unconditionally and she enjoyed watching them grow and was proud of their accomplishments. Funeral services were held from the Benito United Church on Thursday, March 24 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend John Oussoren officiating. Interment followed in the family plot at the Benito Cemetery. Pallbearers were her six grandchildren. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made in Bessie's memory to the Benito United Church Memorial Fund, Swan Valley Health Centre or a charity of choice. The family would like to thank the staff at the Swan River Valley Hospital, Benito Personal Care Home and Thunderhill Court for the care and attention that was provided to her. Arrangements were entrusted to Jim Webster of Swan Valley Funeral Services Ltd., 363 Kelsey Trail (Hwy. 10 North), Swan River, Manitoba, 204-734-5775.
