AGNES PENNY MCCORMACK 1915 - 2011 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Agnes Penny McCormack (nee Ross), Mother, Grandmother and Aunty, on January 28, 2011. Daughter of Thomas Penny Ross and Mary McArthur Stone, sister to Marguerite Penny (Daisy), Mary MacArthur (Molly), Elizabeth Moore (Lily) and John Charles (Jack), she is the last of a generation. Agnes grew up on Owena Street in Winnipeg's Logan neighbourhood attending Pinkham and Hugh John Macdonald Schools, and worshiping at Old St. Andrew's Elgin Avenue. She regaled her youth at Grand Beach with memories of the Dance Pavilion, Merry-go-Round, the Campsite and Midnight train rides. Following the Second World War she moved to Handyside Avenue in North St. Vital where she raised her family and remained to later life. Always active in the local community, Agnes carried on a long standing family tradition by serving as a Sunday School Teacher at the Chinese United Church on Pacific Avenue. She started work late in life, first in Mail Order Catalogue Sales of the T. Eaton Company on Graham Avenue and then with the Canadian National Railway where she retired as Chief Telephone Operator at Union Station in 1980. She had an amazing voice and sang in the choir of the Jubilee Chapter Order of the Eastern Star (Windsor Masonic Temple). She fondly remembered her time as a member of the Mass Choir of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem (Althea #2) that toured North America in the 1970s. She held many executive positions in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion St. Vital Branch #16 where she received her long-service recognition medal in 1997. Agnes was a truly remarkable woman who, in some little way, touched all in her presence. She will be missed. The family wishes to thank the staff at Vista Park Lodge, with special thanks to Crystal and Philomena, for their compassion and care of Mom over the last two years. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service. Donations in Agnes' memory can be made to the Chinese United Church of Winnipeg - Memorial Fund, 281 Pacific Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0M7. Mom / Nan / Granny: When the Lily of the Valley and Lilac are in full spring blossom, and the aroma of fresh shortbread just out of the oven fills our homes, you will always be here with us.
