IRENE (RENE) STRACHAN - NANA Rene, born January 4, 1917 to Thomas and Mary Dickens, has passed peacefully on Sunday, March 27, 2011. She lived all her life in Winnipeg, growing up in West Kildonan, spending over 60 years in the family home on Jackson Avenue in Fort Rouge. Rene was always the first to welcome new neighbours. Rene was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Mary Dickens, husband of 57 years, Bob; son Don, grandson Cam and dear friend Reg Hobday. She loved both playing and watching sports from her early years as a fastball player and speed skater to many years bowling, golfing and curling at the Fort Rouge CC. She and Bob were also constant attendees at their sons' many sporting activities. One of her proudest moments was when the family team won the Fort Rouge mixed bonspiel. For most of her life she was a volunteer at the Red Cross. From the late 40s her summers were spent at the 7th Ave family cottage at Victoria Beach where she had children and grandchildren involved in the many events held there. She always fed the squirrels and even trained the chipmunks to eat out of her pocket. A special pleasure both there and at home was feeding the birds. Nana is survived by son Ken (Lynn) of Phoenix; granddaughters Kimberly (Rick Brodeur) of Phoenix and Marnie (Roy Arnason) of Orlando and their mother Maggie Brennan; granddaughter-in-law Lisa Simone of Calgary; great-grandchildren Braden, (Calgary) and McCrae and Cianna (Orlando). Many thanks go to wonderful friends and neighbours of Nana and to the staff of the Poseidon Personal Care Home and the 3 South ward of Victoria Hospital. From your family and friends, as you used to say Cheerio! To accommodate family and friends a service will be held in July. 204-782-3541 www.kilcollinscremationservice.com
