WINNIPEG POLICE INSPECTOR DOUGLAS ROBERT SUMMERS July 17, 1936 - February 27, 2011 With profound sadness our family announces the passing of Douglas Robert Summers on Sunday, February 27, 2011. Left to mourn Doug's passing is his loving wife Jean; sons Brett and Rob; daughter (-in-law) D'Arcy; grandsons Sean and Jordan; great-granddaughter Keira; as well as by Janique, Holly and Angela. He was blessed with many other friends and family members by whom he will be deeply missed. He was predeceased by his mother Marjorie and father William. Doug was born and raised in Winnipeg. He attended St. John's Collegiate and was proud of his north end heritage; he often returned to his old haunts and spoke with affection of his St. John's days. Throughout his career and in his personal life, Doug was an advocate for justice, and he served the Winnipeg Police Service and the community for 34 years, with pride, honor and distinction. He possessed a relentless curiosity, a remarkable intelligence, and a sharp wit. Doug was a raconteur with many funny stories in his repertoire. A voracious reader with a love of politics and history, he always welcomed the opportunity to debate the day's issues. Throughout their 25 winters at their beloved winter home in Weslaco, Texas, Doug and Jean made many warm and enduring friendships with their fellow snowbirds. No formal Funeral Service will be held. A private family Interment will be held at a later date. Special heartfelt thanks to Roger and Judy Nickerson for their love and support. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made in Doug's memory to a charity of one's choice.
