HUGH SLOAN HAWTHORN After a brief hospitalization, Hugh passed away peacefully at home March 24, 2011 with his loving wife at his side. Left to mourn his passing, his wife of 64 years, Toni, his three children, Karen (Wayne), Eileen (Bill) and Cal (Bev), five grandchildren, Bobby, Danny, Scott, Toni and Andi, his sister Mary, sister-in-law Pat and numerous nieces and nephews. Hugh was born July 18, 1921 in Scotland. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1928. He proudly served his new country during the Second World War. On April 16, 1947, after a brief courtship, Hugh married the love of his life and best friend, Toni. During the early years of their marriage, Hugh and Toni enjoyed an active social life with friends and family. In his later years, Hugh was content at home, surrounded by family, tending his tomatoes, and staying abreast of current events with CNN and the Free Press. Hugh was a man of his word, always punctual, never a hypocrite, a man who valued the love of his wife and family above all else in life. If the worth of a man is measured, as it should be, by the love and devotion of his wife, and the love and respect of his children and grandchildren, Hugh was rich beyond measure. At Hugh's request, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My dad, Lorne Gray and Hughie worked together as driver examiners for many years. The two along with Elmer Hunter were fast friends for years. Dad and Hughie used to deer hunt together, usually eating “track soup” but occasionally getting a deer in the Rapid City area. I will always remember the black and yellow dodge car Hughie drove. He and his family would come to our cottage at Grand Beach. Later when we moved to Dauphin the Hawthornes would come for a visit. A fantastically gracious couple my brothers and I have fond memories of them both, truly a royal couple. Men like he and my Dad are sadly missed today - Posted by: Randy Gray (Friend) on: Dec 31, 2022
