PAULINE HERC (KAFARA) 1913 - 2011 Pauline passed away peacefully at the Betel Personal Care Home in Selkirk, MB, on March 28, 2011. Pauline was predeceased by her husband Rudy; infant daughter Violet; son-in-law Steve; parents Victoria and John; three brothers and three sisters. Pauline is survived by her daughters, Louise, Elizabeth (Jens); grandson Fr. Steven; one brother and three sisters. Pauline was born in Sanok, Poland, she studied at a private school, mastering four languages in preparation for her teaching career. Pauline and Rudy were married at St. Columbus Catholic Church in Swan River, MB. Their first venture was mixed farming at Renwer, MB, where they used good judgment and prospered. Pauline's indoor flowering plants, outdoor vegetable garden and flowers were a sight to behold. Before long, Pauline, Rudy and the girls joined the Herc family in Detroit, MI, where Dad joined his brothers in the restaurant business. Pauline was capable of designing and sewing clothing without a pattern, she found employment at Winkelman's in Northland, MI, where mom modeled and altered exclusive ladies clothing. After taking early retirement from the U.S., they returned to Canada locating in the Selkirk area close to family. All her life Pauline had a beautiful voice, sang in church choirs, concerts and private parties. She had many talents, crocheting bedspreads, tablecloths, ceramics and oil painting which are enjoyed by family and friends. During her entire life mom's pleasure was the joy she received in giving and sharing. Pauline chose to work at the Selkirk Health Centre and later at Betel Home, where she loved and enjoyed helping residents. During retirement Pauline and Rudy enjoyed traveling, which took them to the British Isles, Europe, coast to coast in Canada and the U.S.A. They spent winters in Florida and Arizona. They had two memorable cruises which took them on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway as far as St. Havre, St. Pierre, PQ. Pauline and Rudy's recent 75th Wedding Anniversary celebration was a memorable occasion enjoyed by family and friends. Pauline's greatest happiness came when her cousins Jan and Janina Mazur and family arrived from Sanok, Poland. Agnes being the first to arrive became Pauline and Rudy's special little girl over the past 15 years. Thank you to the Mazur family who were always there for Aunt Pauline, on all special occasions and treated her with the greatest respect even when her health declined and words cannot tell you how much we appreciated your kindness. Thank you to Fr. Henry for spending the last hours with Pauline and her daughters, and for his friendship over many years. Also to Fr. Dado for his monthly services at Betel and his visits with our parents. A special thank you to Betel Home staff for the compassion shown to Pauline and her family at a difficult time. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined, if friends so desire, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
