Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLUBOMYRA (LUBA) CHAYKOWSKA Peacefully on April 7, 2011 Lubomyra (Luba) Chaykowska passed away at the age of 89. Luba was born on May 25, 1921 in Drohobych, Ukraine and immigrated to Canada in 1947. After living in Toronto and Saskatoon, she settled in Winnipeg in 1953, working in the payroll department of the Health Sciences Centre until her retirement. Luba was a respected leader of the Ukrainian community in Canada and the Diaspora. She was very active in Saskatoon and then the Winnipeg branches of the Ukrainian Women's Organization (OYK), developing programs, serving as President and then as National President. As their representative, Luba was President of the National and local Ukrainian Canadian Women's Committee and Presidium member of the national Ukrainian Canadian Congress and member of the audit committee of the Taras Shevchenko Foundation. In her organizational work, Luba was a role model, fostering consensus and common purpose. She leaves a lasting legacy. Luba will be lovingly remembered by her sister Dzidya and brother Orest (Olena) Modrycki and their family members in the Ukraine; her nephews Orest (Jennifer) and Ihor Hewryk and goddaughter Zorianna (Eugene) Hyworon of Winnipeg. Luba was a gracious and elegant lady. Her dinners were legendary, with lively discussions, good humour and her specialty tortes. Luba loved to spend time at her cottage near Ukrainian Park where she entertained family and friends. Throughout her life she touched people with generosity, bringing her sister, brother, nieces and nephews over from the Ukraine for a visit as family was very important to her. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 14 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat M. Buyachok officiating.
