ROBERT HECTOR BROOKE July 10, 1914 April 10, 2011 Bob Brooke in his 97th year, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, passed away April 10, 2011 at the Grace Hospital. Bob was born and grew up in Winnipeg. He worked 42 years for Canadian Westinghouse and was an active member of the Manitoba Electrical Association. Bob became involved as a boy in the Anglican Church through a neighbour, Canon Findlay, who supported him in an opportunity to attend St. John's Boy's School. Canon Findlay nurtured his interest in church, education and football. Bob was an avid football fan holding season tickets to his beloved Bombers for 57 years. Dad was a steadfast contributor to the church, serving in many capacities at St. Patrick's and St. Jude's. He loved curling, playing at Charleswood Curling Club and travelling to a number of World Curling Championships. He loved gardening, woodworking and travel and had the opportunity to travel extensively in retirement. Bob was also a proud Mason belonging to the St. James branch for more than 50 years. As the only child of Jenny McCarthy Brooke, he was pleased to marry into a large family when he married Alice Elizabeth Mensforth in 1941. He loved participating in the extended family life of the Mensforth clan and loved his role as Uncle Bob. This love of family extended to his own children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. In his later years together with Betty he lived at the Sturgeon Creek retirement home where he loved hosting family dinners and enjoyed the activities and excursions. Bob is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty, sons Warren (Doris) and Ralph (Marilyn); daughter Glenda; grandchildren, Allison, Lindsay, Melissa, Tanis and Kimberly; and great-grandchildren Eli, Rylan and Brooklyn. The family would like to thank the staff at the Grace Hospital and Sturgeon Creek Retirement Home for their wonderful care. A celebration of life will be held at St. James Anglican Church, 195 Collegiate St., on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., with interment to follow in the St. James Cemetery, 525 Tylehurst St. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Winnipeg Foundation, Brooke Fund at 1350-1 Lombard Place, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3B 0X3 or visit www.wpgfdn.org.
