HERB ZILKIE Herb's family announces his sudden, but peaceful passing, at home on April 15, 2011 at the age of 87. Herb was born in Ridgeville, Manitoba, on May 6, 1923. After moving to Winnipeg, he married Jean Johnston in 1950. Herb worked for Western Packing and Swifts for many years, before retiring in 1980. After his retirement, Herb and Jean travelled extensively. One of their more memorable journeys was to Hong Kong in 1985 with the Hong Kong Veterans Association; the purpose to view the grave in Sai Wan Cemetery of Jean's father, Pte. David Johnston who died a prisoner of war. Herb and Jean also spent 17 winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. Herb was a member of the Rockwood A.N.A.F. and the Charleswood Adult Day Program where he enjoyed the camaraderie, playing cards, and engaging in the various activities. Herb is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean; daughter Joan (Tim) Connell; his son Todd (Kim) Zilkie; granddaughter Kelly Connell and grandson Wyatt Zilkie. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren and two sisters: Ruth Young and Myrtle (Elmer) Suppes. As per Herb's wishes there will be no service. Private Family Interment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. The burning taper of his life has been extinguished and he has crossed the silent river of death. His work among us is done, yet his influence will live to direct our actions. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715
