RICHARD ALEXANDER HOGG After a lengthy struggle with heart disease, Richard Dick Hogg passed away peacefully at St. Boniface General Hospital, on Palm Sunday morning, April 17, 2011. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Margaret Alice Hogg (nee Dripps) and his grandson, Kurt Conway Unrau. He is survived by his two daughters, Karen Hancock (Jack) of Halbrite, SK and Tannis Ashworth (Edgar Ruble) of Elgin, IL as well as his brother, Roy Hogg (Anne Jervis) of Toronto, ON. At the time of his passing, he had four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard was born October 27, 1929 and was raised in Elmwood (Winnipeg). He was active in Sea Cadets, church and hockey as a young man; laying claim to scoring a goal on Terry Sawchuk, who went on to play for the N.H.L. Music played a major role in his early years and he taught himself to play a trumpet with a passion that could bring his listeners to tears. He joined the Winnipeg Fire Department and he would often tell stories as a fire fighter relating to the great flood of 1950 and the great fire at the Time Building in 1954, speaking also of his time driving the Fire Chief during his 12 years of service for the city. He left the Winnipeg Fire Department for a year to study at the ABI College in St. Paul, MN. Driving was a significant aspect of Richard's life. Whether as an Instructor for Joe Vine Driving Academy, a Duffy's Franchise Owner or an Executive Limo Services provider, he would always be happy to, give ya a lift? either with his vehicle or with a joke from the hundreds he had memorized. He was keenly interested in the activities of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and, as an avid football fan and reader, he could hold his own in any conversation, never shy to share his opinion with anyone. In April 1993, Richard received a Security Certificate of Merit from C.A.S.A. and a special commendation from the R.C.M.P., D Division, for his intervention of two thefts at the Winnipeg International Airport. Family and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, April 26 at the Kilcona Alliance Church, 1977 Norris Road, Winnipeg at 11:00 a.m., Rev. Jamie Howison officiating. The family would like to extend their special thanks to the following caregivers who attended to Dad in the last number of months: Dr. Sharon Barker, Al McBurney, Jan Eshmed, Dr. Chakaborty and Dr. McDiarmid, the nursing gems on 5E at St. Boniface General Hospital and to Kim and his many friends at Robins. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Boniface General Hospital Research Foundation or the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
