HERTA JULIANNA MARTENS BARNES Herta Julianna Martens Barnes was born on February 11, 1918 in Schönwiese, Ukraine and passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011. She moved with her family to Canada in 1926. Herta lived with her parents in Selkirk, Kelwood and McCreary. Eventually Mom moved to Winnipeg where she worked as a housemaid, and met her future husband, the milkman, John Barnes. They were married on September 6, 1939 and raised their four daughters in Weston. Mom was renowned for her baking and knitting. She was predeceased by her husband in 1985. We celebrate her life and rejoice that she is at peace. Herta is survived by her daughters, Jacqueline Ryan, Rose and Ken Small, Palma and Bernie Blieske (Calgary) and Marilyne and Ken Hauser, eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. A memorial service to be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at Bethania Personal Care Home Chapel, 1045 Concordia Avenue. The family wishes to thank Helen Nicholson, (Herta's Guardian Angel), as well as all the staff at Bethania for all the love and care they have provided our Mom over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bethania Personal Care Home or the Mennonite Central Committee.
