NORMAN HARVEY DICKSON
Date of Passing: Apr 27, 2011
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNORMAN HARVEY DICKSON Peacefully, after a long battle with Pick's Disease, our beloved father, brother and grandfather passed away on April 27, 2011 surrounded by family. Norman was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan in July 1934 to Reginald and Ruth Dickson. The family moved to Winnipeg a few months later and settled in Fort Rouge. After graduating from Gordon Bell High School, Norm enrolled in Success Business College where he not only learned essential skills but also became smitten with his young and beautiful Shorthand instructor. Norman and Janet (nee Meyers) were married in June 1957 and celebrated 46 happy years together. Norman began his working career as an office clerk for Osler, Hammond and Nanton, and quickly moved up the ranks in the insurance industry retiring as a Vice President at Reed Stenhouse. Following his retirement, he returned to the workforce at Hayhurst Elias Dudek (HED). Norman had a strong commitment to his community and this was evidenced by his many years of service to the East Kildonan Kiwanis Club. He was a member of St. John's Cathedral and served on the vestry. Norman's interests were varied; he was an avid boatman with a strong preference for the canoe, an excellent dancer, an expert pumpkin gardener, and an eager traveller. Janet and Norman enjoyed their travels to Hawaii, Palm Springs, England, Florida, Las Vegas and California, as well as the many cruises on which they embarked. His favourite place to travel, though, was to the family cottage at Granite Lake where he spent countless hours on the water, enjoyed all aspects of lake living, and perfected his recipe for barbequed blueberry pies. Norman was first and foremost a family man. He was a loving and devoted husband, a caring father who took an active interest in the lives of his children, and he delighted in his grand-children. Norm's gentle character and generous nature will always be remembered. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Janet; and his parents, Reginald and Ruth, Norman's memory will be cherished by his daughter, Sheryl Hunnie (Carey); son, Jeff Dickson (Alina); and grandchildren, Laurysa and Travis Hunnie. He will also be sadly missed by his brother, Fred Dickson (Marlene) and sister-in-law, Linda Budreau (Larry); and their families. We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the excellent staff at Middlechurch, whose care of and compassion for Norman as he progressed through his illness made this journey easier to bear. Thanks too, to Donna for her kindness. If friends so desire, donations to the Alzheimer's Society, to the Kiwanis International Relief Fund (care of the EK Kiwanis), or to a favourite charity would be appreciated. To honour his memory in a personal way plant a garden, hug a child, give a pet some extra attention. Memorial service 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at St. John's Cathedral, 135 Anderson Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Committal to follow in St. John's Cathedral Cemetery.
