KISHINO (KAY) SAKIYAMA (nee SASAKI) 1921 - 2011 Peacefully at home surrounded by family, Kay Sakiyama passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2011. Kay was predeceased by her husband Shigeo in 1992, and by four sisters and one brother. She is survived by sons Rodney (Heather) and Grant (Janice); grandchildren, Andrea (Sean), Amy (Braden), Michael (Rebecca), Marli (Kirk), and Kevin; cherished great-grands, Hana, Will, Jake, Callie, Lily and Autumn; sister Mitzi, brothers-in-law, Dave and Aye, sister-in-law Miyo; and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Born in 1921 to Sui and Kishichiro Sasaki of New Westminster, BC, Kay and her family were interned and relocated east during the Second World War. In 1946, Kay met and married Shigeo Sakiyama. They settled in Winnipeg and Kay, a deeply caring person, worked tirelessly to make a home for her husband, father-in-law, three brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Koko. Additionally Kay was the bookkeeper for Shig's construction company. This company thrives today as Sakiyama Construction Ltd. under son Grant. Kay was an accomplished seamstress and with skill and inspiration, she created outfits for family as well as custom clothes. She was a passionate gardener, a gifted potter, and an amazing cook and baker. Kay and Shig enjoyed traveling. They journeyed to the West Coast and Thunder Bay on many occasions to see family and friends as well as to Ottawa, visiting son Rod and family. An active member of the Manitoba Buddhist Church, Kay spent many hours cooking with the ladies for various events. Those times were remembered fondly, and she was particularly grateful to Naomi Miyae. Kay also enjoyed her social activities with the ladies at Beauchemin Place, and wished to thank them all for their kindness. Special thanks to Grant and Janice for arranging exemplary personal and medical care for Kay; to her family members who supported Kay in her final months and days; to Dr. Ken Van Ameyde, Palliative Care and Home Care staff for their thoughtfulness and compassion that allowed Kay to remain at home with her family by her side. Kay touched everyone who knew her. She was selfless, gracious woman, a patient listener who always made time for others. She welcomed everyone into her home with open arms, preparing delicious exquisitely presented meals. She was a devoted mother, wonderful grandmother, and beautiful friend to all. Much loved, Kay will be deeply missed and remembered always. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Manitoba Buddhist Church on Saturday, June 4. In lieu of flowers, donations in Kay's memory may be made to the Manitoba Buddhist Church, 825 Winnipeg Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0J8. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE (204) 949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca
