GRACE LASTIWKA (McGINN) October 4, 1923 - May 1, 2011 It is with great sadness that Grace's family announce her peaceful passing at the St. Boniface Hospital on Sunday, May 1, 2011 with treasured friends by her side. Grace's warmth and humanity gave great joy to all who knew her. Grace was born in Darlington, England moving to Glasgow, Scotland with her family as a young child. Grace first travelled by ship to Canada as a war bride shortly after the war ended. This journey provided her with many adventurous stories to share over the years. Grace later met and married her life companion Mike. Together Mike and Grace spent their lives befriending and servicing the communities of Minaki, Ontario and Grand Rapids, Manitoba as valued General Store Owner/Operators. As retirement approached they chose to settle in the West End of Winnipeg. In 2005 Grace found her new community of neighbours and friends at Betelstadur Housing Co-Operative where she leaves many to miss her infectious smile, Scottish accent and quick witted humour. Grace's greatest joy throughout her life was returning to visit family in Glasgow, Scotland and greatest life anticipation was nephew Roddy's bi-weekly overseas calls to chat. Grace was predeceased by her beloved husband Michael Lastiwka, brother Tom McGinn, Glasgow, Scotland, sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Roddy McFarlane Glasgow, Scotland, brother Maurice Nicholson, Darlington, England and casino buddy Christine Burr. Grace will be lovingly remembered by nephews, Tom McGinn, Roddy McFarlane (Agnes), Ian McFarlane, all of Glasgow, Scotland; and niece Mary McGinn of Ladson, South Carolina, USA; great-nephew and niece, Martin and Gillian McGinn, both of Glasgow, Scotland. Cherishing her friendship and memory are special friends and family of Gayle Pouliot, Denise Hunter-Taras and husband Don Taras, Judy Demski and Barb McLeod. Special thanks to Helen LeGrange and Nettie Baschuk for their companionship during Grace's residence at Betelstadur, and to the St. Boniface Hospital ER and 6th floor staff for their respectful care of Grace. Grace dearly valued Jason of AAA Massage Therapy At Home for his professionalism, compassion and dedication to his client care relationship with her. In keeping with Grace's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Grace's life is to be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 9, 2011 at Betelstadur Housing Co-Operative Main Floor Common Room, 1061 Sargent Ave., a perfume free facility. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated. No parting words to let us know That you were leaving us And going where you'll feel no pain You'll rest in blissful peace.
